Common questions

How do I time a contraction?

Tap the big button when a contraction starts, and tap it again when it stops. Waves records the duration and the interval since the last one automatically.

What does the stage reading mean?

Waves looks at your recent contractions and describes the pattern in plain language — practice contractions, early labor, active labor, or time to go. It is a summary of what you have logged, not a diagnosis. Always call your doctor or midwife if anything feels wrong, even if Waves has not said “time to go”.

What is the 5-1-1 rule?

Contractions about five minutes apart, each lasting about one minute, holding that pattern for one hour. It is a widely used sign that labor is established. Waves highlights it as soon as your log matches.

I forgot to stop a contraction.

Auto-stop ends it for you after a limit you choose in Settings (1–15 minutes, 3 by default). You can also correct any entry: open History, tap the contraction, and edit the time, duration or intensity — or delete it.

I forgot to record one.

Use the + button in the top bar to add a contraction that already happened.

The lock screen controls aren't showing on my iPhone.

They use Live Activities. Check that Live Activities are enabled for Waves in iOS Settings, and note that older devices and OS versions do not support them. When unsupported, the option is hidden in Settings.

Will I lose my history?

Your history is stored only on your device. It is not backed up to us and cannot be recovered if the app is deleted or the device is reset.

Is my data private?

Yes — nothing is collected or uploaded. See the privacy policy.

Is Waves free?

Yes, entirely. No ads, no account, no subscription. There is an optional tip jar in Settings; every feature works without it.

Still stuck?

Email support@waves.klavins.dev with your device model, OS version, and what you expected to happen. Screenshots help.

Important

Waves is a timing and organizing tool, not a medical device. It does not diagnose labor and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Every pregnancy is different — follow your provider’s specific guidance.
